Newsletter 2 ‘Lets get started’
Dear Sailing enthusiast, Welcome to the second newsletter, we will keep you up-dated with all facts and developments concerning the F18 Worlds 2005. The organization of this great event is in full progress as we speak. We hope you will enjoy this runner-up towards "The Worlds!!" HUH? Qualifications?!? Use quota or not to use quota... That's the question! The fact is, however, with the entries limited to 160 boats and the expected interest in the event, the International F18 Association decided to invoke a quota system to opt for a fair distribution of entries across its member associations. The use of a quota system is not uncommon with Worlds Championships. Unfortunately the use of the quota system was only made official to the Worlds organization at a late stage and required an amendment to the Notice of Race. The next step is that the National F18 Associations, in conjunction with the International F18 Association, are responsible for providing an approved list of eligible entries to the Worlds organization. What criteria they use to prepare such a list is strictly up to them. They may approve the list of current entries on a first come, first serve basis, use a local ranking system, or any other system they feel is appropriate to achieve a fair allocation of the available quota. This implies the system used by each National Association can be different and the applied system itself may cause frustration among the potential competitors. In such as case, we urge you to contact your National F18 Association; not only can the system be explained but it also provides feedback for future improvements, if so required. From the Worlds organization side, we have set a deadline well before the event to receive the approved quota lists and will allocate any unused quota on a first come, first serves basis (see Notice of Race for details). This will aid the competitor in making travel arrangements and for us the entry fee is income to the event. All in all, your anxiety is rightly, but we trust it will aid the mutual understanding of the imposed system. Check your national F18 association if this quota applies for your country, and their qualification details. Imagine: surfing on the BEACH?
